Sunday Kitchen Lessons: How I Finally Mastered My Mother’s Signature Curry
A Quiet Sunday and a Wave of Homesickness
Initially, moving to a new town was thrilling. I loved liberty and independence. However, the joy gradually decreased after a couple of months. The long workdays and empty nights only made me miss my family more. I also craved my mother’s homemade meals.
One Sunday morning, the feeling overwhelmed me even more than usual. I suddenly craved her famous curry made with lady finger. This was an easy recipe, but it always seemed to be able to bring the whole family together. I decided I should learn the recipe since I was unable to go home that weekend.
A Call Home for the Secret Recipe
I didn’t wait long and took my phone and called my mom. She laughed when I told her that I was planning to make her special curry. She patiently led me through the preparation. She even revealed a couple of little tricks that you won’t find in the cookbooks.
She insisted on one thing first. I had to get a fresh lady finger. She claimed that the success of the curry might even depend on the quality of the vegetable. After thoroughly studying our conversation, I went out shopping.
Searching for the Perfect Ingredients
The grocery store was overcrowded with shoppers during the weekend. I slowly navigated a path through the vegetable aisle, examining each basket carefully. My mother instructed me on how to select fresh vegetables.
I selected a few lady finger and tried to find whether they were tender and crispy. While some were over matured, some were perfect. After some time, I filled my basket.
I went to the same grocery store to purchase onions, tomatoes and masala as well. As I stood in the billing line, I felt strangely connected to home. Even a simple shopping reminded me of helping my mother in the supermarket.
Learning Through Trial and Error
Returning to my flat, I started cooking. The first few actions seemed straightforward. Then there was the difficulty of mixing the different spices without overpowering any one of them.
Luckily, my mother was on video call to tell me step by step what to do. So, I chopped the lady finger and put it in the pan. The delicious smell filled the house. It was the first time, my apartment smelled like home. I adjusted the seasoning and added the final batch of lady finger.
More Than Just a Curry
After making the curry I sat down to eat. The flavor was slightly different compared to my mom’s but overall surprisingly close enough. The emotions, memories, and teachings of the past made each bite special.
That Sunday taught me something important. Cooking is not merely a set of instructions to be followed. It is a way of preserving family traditions and keeping the bond of love even when one is far away. Besides, going to a grocery store I can order vegetables online, and I would know exactly which recipe I will be making again.
